Sam Muchnik

My Story...

My parents, William Muchnik and Leah (Coodin) Muchnik came to Canada from the Ukraine in 1925, shortly after their marriage. They settled in Winnipeg and worked together in a small grocery store in the Point Douglas area near the Louise Bridge. Our family lived behind the store.

My sister Marion was born December 12, 1926 and I followed on January 31, 1932. I attended Argyle School for grades 1 to 6, Machray School for grades 7 to 9, and graduated grade 12 from St. John's High School in 1950. From 1950 to 1953, I attended University of Manitoba and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. I then attended University of Toronto and in 1957 graduated with a Dental Degree, D.D.S.

I have been practicing dentistry at the same location, Main and Jefferson in Winnipeg for the past 42 years. Since graduation I have been very active with the Jewish Dental Fraternity, Alpha Omega, and am also a life member of Signa Alpha Mu Fraternity. I am now an Honorary Life Member of the Manitoba Dental Association and the Winnipeg Dental Association.

I married Rose (Bober) Stitz in December, 1961 and we have four children: Paul, Rhonda, Saralyn and Davina. Three children are married, and we have five grandchildren: Lindsay and Jacob Muchnik, and Rebecca, Alison, and Jessica Schwenk.

For the past twenty years I have been a regular member at the Reh-Fit Centre and since the opening of the Asper Jewish Community Campus, I also attend the Rady Centre for physical exercise.

Rose and I keep a kosher home and all our children were educated in the Hebrew Day Schools. We regularly attend Sabbath services at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue.

Unfortunately, my children now live in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver, but it is my wish that the Jewish community of Winnipeg continue to thrive.
