My Story...

Richard Sures was a person of great integrity, empathy and love for family. His parents Noah and Mary (Golden) had strong community roots in Winnipeg and Richard was close to his siblings, Lawrence, Tabala and Ruth. He formed long-lasting friendships, graduating from Kelvin high school, the University of Manitoba, and Cornell University with a Masters in Industrial and Labor Relations. During his first year working in Toronto, he met Estelle. They married on September 1, 1957 enjoying the next 45 years together until his death in 2003.

Estelle Flesher grew up in Ottawa with parents Frank and Muriel (Petigorsky) and brother Marty. While Head Girl at the High School of Commerce, she was selected as one of 50 girls in Canada to attend the Queen's Coronation in 1953 and tour Great Britain, sponsored by the late Garfield Weston. In 1954, she received a scholarship from the National Council of Jewish Women to attend the University of Toronto.

In a spirit of adventure after their wedding, they travelled in Europe and Israel for one year before settling in Winnipeg. After a stint in the retail world, Richard discovered his entrepreneurial spirit and became a successful apartment developer.

After moving to Winnipeg and completing her B.A. degree at the University of Winnipeg, Estelle worked there as Acting Registrar, 1959-62. With the arrival of children Michelle, Corinne, Nathan and Gary, they were both proud and loving parents which expanded to their grandchildren Joeley, Dustin and Sierra (Corinne and Ian Pulver), Mikaela (Michelle and David Rath), and Ava and Nahla (Elana (Kathnelson) and Gary.

Estelle worked part-time in PR for the Children's Hospital and became Director of PR at the Health Sciences Centre, 1972-80. From 1980-1985 Richard and Estelle moved to Vancouver where Richard worked as a developer and Estelle as Director of Communications for St. Paul's Hospital. They returned to Winnipeg where he was a developer and she Communications Director, Manitoba Community Services, and later a PR consultant. Richard's achievement before he retired was the development of the Ashdown Warehouse condo, a heritage building.

In Vancouver, Richard served as President of the Jewish Child and Family Services. Estelle had a lifelong involvement with the National Council of Jewish Women. It is to both those organizations that Estelle wished to honour Richard and support their work through the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.
