David Solomon

My Story...

Lest my existence be recorded only in the Rosh Pina Memorial Park, the Endowment Book of Life provides the opportunity to document a brief family history.

I was born in Winnipeg on October 8th, 1946 the only son of Julia (Birch) and Earl Solomon. I have one sister, Carol Lynne Fineman. My family also includes my brother-‐in-‐law Harvey Fineman, my nephew Adam Charles Fineman, his wife Beth Title and great-‐nieces Meryn Laurel Fineman, and Kera Jordyn Fineman, my niece Lisa Nicole Manning, her husband Daniel Manning, and my great-‐nephew Wil Laurie Manning and great-‐niece Farrah Molly Manning.

My father was born in Winnipeg in 1914 and made his living as a lawyer. His parents, Sylvia (Cooper) and David Lionel Solomon emigrated from Poland and were active both in Winnipeg's Jewish community and in their business.

My mother was born in Bobrinitz, Russia in 1921. Due to the persecution during the pogroms, she came to Canada in 1927 together with her parents, Celia and Nathan Birch. It was these grandparents that introduced me to cottage life at Winnipeg Beach, which I still enjoy today. My mother also has a sister Lucy (Birch) Melzack, her husband Ron and their two children Lauren and Joel.

I was raised on Matheson Avenue in Winnipeg's north end and attended Peretz School, Luxton, Champlain, St. John's Tech, United College and the University of Manitoba. I endured my Bar Mitzvah, and enjoyed B'nai Brith Camp. I belonged to the YMHA, USY, BBYO and in university, Sigma Alpha Mu. I was raised in a kosher home and our family attended synagogue on Jewish holidays. Many of my fondest memories center around my grandparents' cottage at Winnipeg Beach.

I graduated from the University of Manitoba and am an interior designer.

In both my personal and my professional life I strive to be just and fair, and to be a giver – "no strings attached". My family and extended family are important to me and I wish future generations of our family a good quality of life.

I also wish the Jewish community well and my commitment to the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba comes with the hope that the community will enjoy a strong and vital presence within the broader community.
